Kataklysm never fails to get my juices flowing when putting out new material. Prevail is no exception - its a solid sounding, well produced album. Instrumentally crushing, vocally crushing, all around crushing. Yet Prevail sounds eerily familiar, this almost a cookie cutter of their previous material, as if Kataklysm found the magic cookie cutter and used it to stamp out Prevail. Again, this isn't a bad thing, especially if you like that sound, but it doesn't provide any examples of the band growing musically. For the new or casual listener, this poses no problem, Prevail is a solid record, but for the long time fan it starts to sound monotonous, just more of the same on a new disc. Personally I enjoy Prevail, and listen to it over and over, as the sound that Kataklysm has captured is one I enjoy. Prevail is almost reminiscent of Fear Factory in some aspects, where the guitar, bass, and drum are so tightly synced that it presents a rhythmic wall of sound.
